Background

The programme centred on a pair of interdimensional operatives, the titular Sapphire and Steel. Very little was revealed about their purposes or backgrounds in the course of the series but they appeared to be engaged in guarding the order, if not the integrity of Time. In the series, it was explained that Time is like a corridor that surrounds everything, but there are weak spots where Time - implied to be a potentially malignant force - could break into the present and take things. There were also creatures from the beginnings and ends of time that roamed the corridor looking for the same weak spots to break through.

The Wiccan Triumvirate

Coffee Cup The world around Kate was completely stationary, there was no movement. Not even the air around her stirred. All was still.’OK now?’ It was the man, looking at her calmly. Kate’s face was still stinging from his slap. ‘Wha..who..you!’ Kate was addressing her assailant, who not only was able to move, but apparently completely oblivious to what has just happened. ‘Fine. She was, she liked to think, a quiet sort of a person, liked to wear black to remain inconspicuous, today was no exception, black knitted top, long black skirt, and her long black coat, black knee length boots and black handbag completed the ensemble.
